There are many ways to travel and camp…as we’re learning. We are continuing our search for the best mode that suits our lifestyles and personalities yet also is financially sound.
Not always the easiest thing to balance.
While the hippie in us romanticizes about traveling the country in a VW camper van that pops up in the middle…living on nothing but love and cheetos…carefree with our toes in the sand. Ahhhhh. But I digress…badly!
In the last part of this series, I talked a little about our cursory investigation into RV options. In this, I plan on discussing the opposite side of the coin, if you will. The Travel Trailer v. Fifth Wheel debate.
They really are both just travel trailers….the difference is the way they are connected to your towing vehicle. You first have to decide which trailer will suit your needs, then you need to find a vehicle to tow it with. Unless you already have the towing vehicle, then I guess you’re a little more limited, just look at trailers in your towing capacity.
When we went to the RV dealer, we briefly looked at the different types of trailers they had available, both new and used. We were surprised at what we learned, in that there really is a travel trailer for every taste, lifestyle and preference! Take a look…..
It’s a little difficult picking any type, because when you look in them, it’s hard to imagine living in that full-time. I imagine we are going to allot some “Trailer/RV Relief Funds” for just such times we will start feeling boxed in. We’ll stay in a hotel here and there, and when we are in town visiting family and friends around the country, we may just stay with them if they have the space.
There were some absolutely gorgeous fifth wheels on this particular lot we perused.
Almost like a condo inside! Okay…half a condo. Still, c’mon.
There is an island in the kitchen. An island. I don’t even have one in my kitchen now because there isn’t room.
And check out the two leather recliners. And a couch. If you turn directly behind you, there are storage cabinets and to the left of those are four steps you go up into the bedroom. Okay…that kinda reminds me of being a kid and riding in the space over the cab in the cool Class C RV we had when I was little….hmmm.
Probably out of our price range and we didn’t have time to get into the specifics on trailers and fifth wheels. We saved that for another trip, so we still have some research to do.
We have heard from a few people that fifth wheels are easier to maneuver and more stable. That seems to make sense because of how they are attached. Seems like a lot more contact with the towing vehicle as opposed to a ball hitch.
While the jury is still out on the Travel Trailers v. Fifth Wheel case, I imagine, should we go the “two-vehicle” route, we will end up with something along the lines of:
Or maybe the travel trailer route:
This is what I’m picturing. I would love to come across a great combo like either one of these for sale like on Craig’s list or something. That would be sweet:)
But only when we’re ready!

Some fifth wheels are like luxury mansions inside! We walked into one a few months ago and were just floored – couldn’t pick our jaws off the ground!

It was pretty amazing, the level of poshness some of these things have! You definitely can’t say you’re “roughing it” if you live in one of these!
